BETTY is the daughter of Irish immigrants, second oldest of six children who grew up on a farm in the rural area of Kentucky. Betty falls in love and marries Arvin, who has city dreams, and follows him to Chicago. While Arvin is realizing his city dreams Betty is working as a domestic watching twins and cooking for the family. The only dream Betty has is to have a family and a place of her own. Her dream always seems to elude her as she continues to live in the shadow of her husband’s city dreams. First she finds herself living in one of Chicago's settlement houses. She continues to support her husband’s city dreams and is thrust into the world of bootlegging during the prohibition era and prostitution during the great depression. Betty’s dream slowly slips away as she is now alone with her girls after Arvin leaves her.

Then Betty meets and marries John, an influential city official 20 years her senior. It appears Betty’s dream has finally materialized. However, John’s home is a boarding house, and Betty is expected to clean and cook for the boarders. When John dies his family puts Betty out of the house. Once again, Betty finds herself alone.

Betty continues to survive taking odd jobs around the city. She feels beaten and is convinced she has nothing of importance to offer anyone. Her self-esteem is at its lowest when her best friend tells her of an opportunity that changes Betty’s life.  Through this opportunity, Betty changes the life of a young boy which changes Betty’s life forever. She didn’t fulfil the dream she thought she had, she discovered so much more. Betty’s story can be read as a metaphor for our own journey through life or what truly makes us happy.

CAROL is the youngest daughter of Betty, who struggled most of her life to make ends meet. When Betty’s husband left her for another woman, Carol was sent to a Catholic boarding school. Where she spent part of her adolescence. The nuns became her family, and Carol dreamed she would have a family of her own one day.

When Betty remarried, Carol was excited to be reunited with her mother and have a family once again, but the dream eluded her. She realized that her mom’s new husband wasn’t a family man.

Once on her own, Carol started working as a hatcheck girl in a nightclub and the owner and staff soon filled the role of family until Eddie came along. Carol was excited to be embarking on her Big City Dream of having a family of her own, only to be betrayed.
